Dwayne Johnson is now the highest-paid actor, but his beginnings were riddled with bad luck and adversities. One doesn’t just become the biggest person in Hollywood by doing the gigs given to them at their ease, it’s all hard work and determination. Bundled together with his unlimited charisma and good nature, Johnson shot up to the top of the mountain in less than a decade.
But it all would have to even have started if it wasn’t from The Mummy Returns. Johnson has expressed his gratitude to the director of the movie countless times. But it isn’t often that we hear praise from the director about an actor’s first performance.
The director of The Mummy Returns tells a persevering story about Dwayne Johnson
As it was the first movie of the WWE mega-star Dwayne Johnson, everything was different, but he pulled through. The director of the movie, Stephen Sommers, told Entertainment Weekly, “He arrives on the set Friday morning and Dwayne had really bad food poisoning and heatstroke. It was probably 110, 112 degrees, and everybody’s in shorts and tank tops, and he would be covered in blankets, just shivering. And he is such a trooper.”
“I will always love him, because I’m like, ‘Dwayne, we’ve only got one day! I can’t put it off! We can’t wait for you to get well!’ He goes, just get the camera rolling, and as soon as I hear ‘Background’ I’ll jump up.’ And that’s what he did. We did, ‘…and background!’ All the extras start going and I go, ‘Action!’ and Dwayne, he threw off the blankets and charged forward. And we just went all day. That guy gutted it out because he was just a mess.”
Fast forward to today where The Rock is using everything in his power to raise a dead movie franchise, DCEU, into the mainstream. Every interview, post, or interaction has some sort of Black Adam sprinkled into it. And this feels like Johnson cares about this project a lot. Something we have not seen so much of in the former WWE Champion for a few years now.
