Though the sport of golf depicts utter respect and harmony among competitors, it does not lack in including fierce rivalry. The sport has had many feuds over the years which has left the fans divided. The rivalry between Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka is one such example. However, let’s take a look back at 2019 when DeChambeau decided to end their cold war with a heart-to-heart conversation.

Koepka and DeChambeau have shared a rivalry worth remembering in modern-day golf. The feud even earned the stars their own edition of ‘The Match’. Nonetheless, it was in 2019, when things escalated between the current LIV Golf stars.

Bryson DeChambeau unhappy with Brooks Koepka’s ‘slow play’ comments

The initiation of vendetta began in early 2019 during the Dubai Classic, with several people pointing fingers towards Bryson DeChambeau for slow play. Among many included his opponent, Brooks Koepka.

Though Koepka never mentioned DeChambeau’s name, the fans and media seemingly understood the words were for DeChambeau who was gaining a reputation for slow play. “I just don’t understand how it takes a minute and 20 seconds, a minute and 15 to hit a golf ball; it’s not that hard”, said Brooks Koepka.

When asked to share his reaction to the 4 time Major winner’s comments, DeChambeau simply stated that he liked to take at least 45 seconds before a shot. Though this ignited the feud among the stars, it only required a conversation to cool down the momentum of the rivalry towards the latter part of the year.

Later in the 2019 season, both men were competing at the Northern Trust tournament. DeChambeau saw the opportunity to have a chat with his critic, Koepka. The 29-year-old approached Koepka’s caddie and told him to say the slow-play comments to his face.

Despite DeChambeau’s anger initially in the conversation, things eventually cooled down between the stars. Though the details of the conversation were kept private by both golfers,  DeChambeau gave an overview to the media on how the conversation unfolded.

“I just pretty much told him, he said a lot of things about slow play out in the public, and you guys have asked him that and he has the right to say things just as I do,” he said. DeChambeau further added how he “wanted to clear the air” with Koepka. He also said, “He’s got respect for me; I have respect for him. So no issues”.

In the end, DeChambeau shed light on how human beings must never have hard feelings for others and leave peacefully with each other. “That’s what I love. That is what we all should be doing as human beings is doing our best to make it right with each other”, he ended.

The heat between both golfers seemed to cool down, as both men competed together for a win for Team USA at the 2020 Ryder Cup. However, after all the hugging and celebration, the rivalry was brought back to light during the 2021 edition of ‘The Match’. Though sheer competitiveness may still exist among the duo, the velocity of hatred has surely reduced.
