Former unified heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua is currently experiencing a downward trajectory in his career. In just a matter of a few years, the British Boxer has managed to lose his championship, losing twice to current champion Oleksandr Usyk in succession.

However, the former champion has more often than not blamed his trainers and coaches for his shortcomings. This has made him infamous among trainers who feel that ‘AJ’ should burden some of the blame on himself. Moreover, renowned trainer Shane McGuigan is also of the same view and believes that Joshua should not change his trainers on a constant basis.

Shane McGuigan drops a truth bomb on Anthony Joshua

In an interview with Boxing King Media, McGuigan stated that ‘AJ’ was notorious for changing trainers on a constant basis. According to him, this shows that he was blaming his failures and losses on his coaches. However, he claimed that Joshua should hold himself accountable rather than his team.

The fact is he’s been around a few different trainers and that automatically makes you think he is blaming the trainer for not performing. The bottom line is it is with you. You are responsible for your performance. ” he said

Following this, he went on to praise Joshua’s former coach Robert Garcia but added that it was hard for his style to be implemented if Joshua didn’t listen to him.

Robert Garcia has an unblemished record, he’s incredible, he has produced many world champions, and is a great coach. But if you’re not listening to him, you’re not taking on board what he is saying then it is hard to implement his tactics.” he added.

McGuigan feels that Joshua is going through a crisis in his life and needs to buckle down. This analysis does have some weight to it given Joshua has changed multiple trainers in just a few years.

How many coaches have Joshua changed in his career?

Before his first loss to Usyk, Joshua trained under Robert McCracken. However, after his loss, the two would part ways with Joshua hiring Robert Garcia. The veteran coach would then train him for the rematch which yielded the same result for the British boxer despite a better performance.

Following this, Joshua would go on to sack Garcia as well and is currently without a coach and in a hunt for a new one. The former champion now needs to finalize his next trainer if he wants to make a comeback for his lost titles.
