German Star Angelique Kerber Says Coco Gauff Will Soon Be ‘in a Position to Win Grand Slams’

It was the French Open this year. American sensation, Coco Gauff had entered her maiden Grand Slam final. She was up against Iga Swiatek in the finals, who was in red-hot form. The latter maintained her winning streak as she defeated Gauff in straight sets in the summit clash to win her second French Open title.

Despite the loss, it was a memorable tournament for Gauff. Moreover, she also reached the final in women’s doubles. Recently, German tennis star, Angelique Kerber talked about the possibility of Gauff winning major titles in the future.

Angelique Kerber feels Coco Gauff can challenge Iga Swiatek at the top

During an interview, the three-time Grand Slam champion was asked about who can challenge Iga Swiatek at the top. Replying to this question, she said, “I think Iga will head the world rankings for a long while. One player that’s come on very well and who has shown, and not only at the US Open, that she is also able to play consistently good tennis under pressure is Coco Gauff.”

Further, she went on to add, “I feel she will also soon be in a position to win Grand Slams and challenge for top spot.”

The rivalry between Swiatek and Gauff is nicely taking shape. They first met in the semifinals in Rome last year where Swiatek prevailed in straight sets. Further, they have already faced off against each other twice this year, with the Polish star winning on both occasions.

Kerber lauds Swiatek

The German tennis star also talked about what made Swiatek so strong. She said, “It’s mainly her consistency… She’s mentally strong and continues to work hard even after all her successes. That and the intensity that marks her game on court from the start right up until the end makes her a player that is very difficult to beat.”

Swiatek is enjoying one of the best seasons of her tennis career. She has clinched the French Open and the US Open this year, apart from several other titles.
